Unity State Government Declines Request to Relocate Residents from Oil Field Area

The Unity State government has rejected a proposal to relocate communities living adjacent to a major oil field, following objections raised by local authorities and village representatives who oppose displacement plans.

The request, initially made by the oil company operating in the block due to safety concerns and development expansion, was presented during a recent meeting with state and county officials. However, state leaders ruled it unfeasible without a comprehensive resettlement framework and immediate benefits for the affected communities.

Governor Joseph Akech emphasized that any relocation must prioritise the needs of residents, including secure land rights, livelihood guarantees, and social services at a designated resettlement site. “We will not support displacement unless there is a clear plan to upgrade living conditions,” he stated.

Village chiefs from Guit and Rubkona counties raised concerns at the meeting, noting that hundreds of families have built homes and farms near the oil installation and depend on the location for grazing and fishing. They faulted the oil firm for moving forward without meaningful community consultation.

Civil society groups welcomed the government’s stance but urged all parties to intensify dialogue. “This is more than a location issue. it’s about preserving the economic and social fabric of communities,” said a local NGO leader.

The oil company has signalled willingness to engage further, stating that it is preparing a detailed resettlement plan and exploring on-site safety improvements in the short term. It also proposed coordinating with the state government to establish infrastructure, healthcare and education facilities in affected areas.

The Unity State government has given the operator a 30-day window to present an enhanced proposal, which must include community-endorsed resettlement options and clearly defined compensation packages before any decision is made.

The decision not to approve relocation reflects a growing governmental responsibility to balance resource-driven development with local rights underscoring the sensitivity of oil operations in conflict-affected and resource-sensitive regions.

As discussions continue, residents remain vigilant as state and company representatives work to negotiate a responsible solution that addresses safety, livelihoods, and social cohesion.
