Zimbabwean Government Fulfils Empowerment Pledge for War Veterans in Manicaland

The Zimbabwean government has officially delivered on its pledge to provide economic empowerment to war veterans in Manicaland, launching a series of support initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods for freedom fighters from the Chimurenga era.

At a ceremony held in Mutare, Provincial Affairs Minister signed off on distributing agricultural input packages to over 500 veterans, including seeds, fertiliser, and small-scale irrigation kits. The package also includes training in modern farming techniques and access to micro-loans, aiming to enhance crop production and create sustainable income streams.

In addition to farming support, the initiative includes:

Small-business grants: Eligible veterans received seed capital of roughly US $3,000 to establish enterprises such as poultry, beekeeping, and artisanal crafts.
Skills training: Beneficiaries are set to participate in workshops on financial management, marketing, and value addition – designed to promote self-reliance and reduce dependence on government support.
Land allocations, Scores of veterans were formally registered on smallholder farms, granting them land tenure to cultivate cash and food crops.

Speaking at the event, Manicaland Provincial Affairs Minister praised the programme as a milestone in honouring the promise to war veterans. “This is more than a handout it is a pathway to independence and dignity,” he said, commending the beneficiaries for their sacrifice during Zimbabwe’s struggle for liberation.

War veterans expressed gratitude, with one beneficiary noting that the support would offer a chance to rebuild their lives and contribute to community development. “We are no longer sidelined; we can now farm, trade and care for our families,” he said.

The initiative underscores the government’s broader agenda of addressing historical welfare obligations while promoting productive citizenship. Provincial officials indicated that similar empowerment drives are ongoing in other regions, targeting sectors such as mining, tourism, and renewable energy.

Civil society groups welcomed the intervention but urged continued follow-up to ensure full support, including market access and provision of post-training support. They also highlighted the need for transparent monitoring to ensure resources reach rightful beneficiaries.

As Manicaland veterans take up agricultural and entrepreneurial paths, authorities hope the initiative will deliver sustainable economic uplift and narrow historical inequities, strengthening national development in the process.
