Mashonaland East joins Tete province in Mozambique’s independence celebrations

RELATIONS between Zimbabwe and Mozambique were taken to another level when Mashonaland East province joined the people of Tete Province in commemorating that country’s 50th Independence anniversary this Wednesday.

A high-level delegation led by Mashonaland East Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Itayi Ndudzo, took part in the celebrations held at the Pavilion of the City of Tete.

The delegation included government officials, farmers, miners, business leaders, members of the ruling ZANU PF party, and local authorities, a gesture of solidarity with Zimbabwe’s historic ally.

“We are excited as Mashonaland East to be part of these important celebrations to mark 50 years of your independence. This shows the close relationship we have as two countries,” Advocate Ndudzo said.

The Mozambiquan government showed appreciation over the visit by the Zimbabwean delegation.

“We thank the people of Zimbabwe for joining us on this important day as we recognise and celebrate the sacrifices made by our heroes,” Governor for Tete Province Mr Domingo Viola said.

Chairperson of the War Veterans League in Mashonaland East Major Retired Daniel Matengo noted that Mozambique will always be part of Zimbabwe’s history.

“This is one country that sacrificed a lot for us and we always cherish this great relationship.”

The Provincial Secretary Ms Cristina Mafumo led in the laying of wreaths at the Independence Square.

Veterans of the Mozambiquan liberation struggle were also honoured with liberation medals in recognition of their sacrifice towards their country’s emancipation from Portuguese occupation.
