MEDIA practitioners are being encouraged to leverage emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), to improve accuracy, efficiency, and credibility in news reporting, ultimately promoting public trust and regional cohesion.

As the digital landscape rapidly evolves, the media sector is being urged to harness the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance content delivery and fact-checking, while combating the spread of misinformation that erodes societal trust.

This call was made by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Mr Nick Mangwana, during the official opening of a three-day virtual familiarisation session on adjudication documents for Regional Adjudication Committee (RAC) member states, ahead of the SADC Media Awards evaluation process in Harare.

“I challenge the media to harness the power of AI and digital technologies to enhance storytelling, fact-checking and audience engagement. Let’s work together to build a resilient media ecosystem that can withstand the challenges of fake news and disinformation. Journalism is not just about reporting news, it is about shaping narratives that can transform societies. Let’s continue to tell the stories of our region, highlighting triumphs, challenges, successes and setbacks and use our words and images to inspire, educate, and ignite positive change,” he said.

SADC Head of Communication and Public Relations at the SADC Secretariat Ms Barbara Lopi, who spoke virtually, commended Zimbabwe for its outstanding dedication as chair of the regional bloc.

“I commend the government of the Republic of Zimbabwe for its outstanding dedication during its tenure as chair, including hosting high-level events and meetings. The student-focused initiative ensures regional achievements and aspirations reach a broader audience. I urge national leaders and coordinators to continue supporting this vital initiative,” she said.

Throughout the three-day session, adjudicators from across the region will meticulously evaluate entries in the print, photo, radio and television categories.

The awards identify and honour works that best reflect the spirit of regional integration, development and unity within the SADC bloc.
