THE government has confirmed that no major damage was recorded at Sally Mugabe Hospital following Saturday’s fire incident.
This was revealed during a visit to the hospital in Harare this Sunday by the Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr Douglas Mombeshora, who assessed the extent of the damage.
The fire affected a storeroom containing old patients’ records and bedding. Ten solar panels, along with an inverter and batteries that supplied power to the laboratory, were also destroyed.
“We have since established the fire destroyed old hospital records that were waiting to be transferred to the archives storage facility and hospital beds and old mattresses that were also supposed to be disposed. We have not yet found the cause of the fire, but solar panels that were installed up the roof were destroyed as they supplied power to the laboratory below. However they have not affected operations and power supply at the hospital,” he said.
Sally Mugabe Hospital is one of the largest referral medical institutions that offer health services not only for Harare residents but also to others from various parts of the country.
