ZIMBABWE needs to achieve their highest-ever possible run chase to beat South Africa in the first Test after the visitors set a 537-run target at Queens Sports Club this Monday.
The Chevrons are faced with a mammoth task to rescue the first Test after South Africa put in a 537-run target on the third day.
In response, the Chevrons did well to absorb pressure from the Proteas until the last over of the day when they lost the wicket of Takudzwa Kaitano for 12 leaving Zimbabwe on 32 for 1 still needing 505 more runs for victory.
“We have to play with character, we have to be confident but disciplined and play the ball. On merit, we have to understand the time available but said it is easier said than done we are playing against quality opposition who will challenge all our skills,” Chevrons batting coach, Dion Ebrahim said.
South Africa batted first and put in 418 runs for 9 before they declared.
The Chevrons huffed and puffed to 251 runs with Sean Williams scoring more than half of the runs for Zimbabwe leaving them with a big deficit before the Proteas added salt to injury in their second innings after being dismissed for 369 with a lead of 537 runs.
Zimbabwe will resume day four with nine wickets in hand chasing history against the World Test Champions.
