Morocco to Build World’s Tallest Ferris Wheel Ahead of 2030 World Cup

Morocco has unveiled plans to construct the world’s tallest Ferris wheel, the Rabat Observation Wheel, in advance of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which the country will co-host alongside Spain and Portugal. Scheduled for completion in time for the tournament, the $305 million structure will soar to 264 metres, surpassing Dubai’s Ain Dubai by 14 metres.

Privately funded through investors, the ferris wheel will be situated in Rabat and is expected to become a major tourist attraction and symbol of Morocco’s ambitions to create world-class entertainment infrastructure. Once finished, the wheel aims to provide panoramic views of the capital’s skyline and the Atlantic coastline.

The announcement comes amid a wider $4 billion-plus infrastructure surge across the country for the 2030 World Cup and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Morocco is also investing in stadium upgrades, airport expansions, high-speed rail, and urban transport systems in host cities such as Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, Fez, Tangier, and Agadir. These initiatives aim to boost tourism and modernize national amenities ahead of the global football showcase.

Government officials say the ferris wheel project is part of a strategic effort to promote long-term socioeconomic benefits beyond the tournament by enhancing recreational infrastructure, attracting foreign investment, and showcasing Morocco’s cultural and urban development.

While this project reinforces Morocco’s image as an emerging destination for large-scale entertainment and tourism ventures, some critics warn that public attention and resources should remain balanced in favor of healthcare, education, and essential municipal services.

Final design and construction timelines have yet to be released, but the Rabat Observation Wheel stands as a high-profile addition to Morocco’s ambitious preparations for hosting one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
