ROADWORKS on the Harare-Kanyemba Highway have brought excitement to motorists who are optimistic that road dualisation will help in minimising road carnage while boosting tourism and business opportunities in Mashonaland Central Province.
The Highway, which is currently undergoing significant rehabilitation and upgrading as part of the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme (ERRP), stands as a beacon of hope for motorists who believe the dualisation and modernisation of the road will improve safety.
“This road is now too narrow for the flow of traffic, and accidents are prone to happen, but having it widened will help in minimising accidents,” said one motorist.
“Accidents are our main worry, and I am sure having a good road will help with that problem. The Second Republic has been really progressive, especially in improving the road network,” another road user said.
For some, the over 350km road project will serve as a gateway to neighbouring countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique and Tanzania, which will boost trade, while also encouraging tourism and business opportunities in Mashonaland Central Province.
“We are really happy because of the opportunities that the road will open up. Having a good road network means good business, and this is really encouraging.
“You will even realise that having a good road network will encourage visitors to come and visit tourist destinations that we have and even locals as well. Most people are living in period urban areas, and this will make movements easier,” locals said.
Exodus and Company site agent, Engineer Arnold Jeme, gave an update on the current works.
“We are working from the new Parliament junction up to Blueridge. We are expecting to finish the works on the new carriage way and the existing road by the end of this year and continue up to Mazowe town. From Blue Ridge up to Mazowe town, we are going to construct two bridges,” he said.
The project, which is part of the broader Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme, is expected to facilitate investments in mining, transport, and related industries in Mashonaland Central Province.
