Ethiopia has digitalised more than 900 government services as part of its national digital transformation agenda, the Ministry of Innovation and Technology announced. The initiative is being implemented under the Digital Ethiopia 2025 strategy, which aims to modernise public services and strengthen the country’s digital economy.
Seyoum Mengesha, Lead Executive Officer for Digital Economy Development at the Ministry, said that various efforts have been made to accelerate the strategy, including the rollout of digital services, the creation of a digital payments system, and the introduction of a national digital identification programme, reports ENA, a partner of TV BRICS.
He noted that the country has made substantial progress in building digital infrastructure since the launch of the strategy. This includes the construction of international-standard data centres, along with improved access to electricity and internet connectivity. Mobile and internet subscriptions have increased significantly, and digital payment systems are steadily expanding.
Gabriella Abraham, a legal and policy expert at the National Identification Programme, underscored the importance of digital IDs in the wider transformation process. She stated that more than 20.4 million citizens have received digital identity cards to date.
