Life-changing eye care draws hundreds to Norton Eye Unit

THE Norton Eye Unit has emerged as a national centre for eye treatment, drawing patients from across Zimbabwe and restoring vision one individual at a time.

Situated at Norton Hospital and operating in partnership with the Council of the Blind, the unit has established a strong reputation for high-quality eye care services, providing hope to patients facing visual challenges.

Each day, hundreds of patients travel from across the country to access the clinic’s life-changing services.

Patients such as Passmore Tsuro, Gogo Chinamhora, and Elizabeth Zivanai have attested to the positive impact of the facility.

“I stay in Mufakose. When it started, my eyes were misty, and with time, I realised I was losing my eyesight. Last year, I came for the first time and had surgery on one eye, it was a miracle as my eyesight got better. Today, I am back for the other eye,” a patient said.

“I am from Gweru. My neighbour in Mkoba came here for eye care, and her life has changed. I am happy I managed to come here because I know that is where my healing lies,” another patient noted.

The clinic has become a popular eye care solution centre based on the services it provides.

“This is the Norton Eye Unit under the Council for the Blind at Norton Hospital. The reason for the high traffic we are seeing is our consistency in providing quality services. We offer consultations on eye health, and surgeries are performed on specific days, Tuesdays and Thursdays every other week.

“We carry out cataract operations, some glaucoma surgeries, and regular eye checks. On average, we perform about 60 cataract surgeries per week, and occasionally, we do glaucoma procedures, including laser treatments like CPC. We also treat diabetic patients through retinal laser therapy, such as PRP. On average, we attend to between 120 and 150 patients,” Norton Eye Unit’s Administrator, Ms Grace Jegedeshe said.

With its consistent, affordable, and life-changing services, the Norton Eye Clinic is a beacon of hope for patients from across the country, feeding to the government’s drive to transform the national health care system.
