Health officials in West Pokot County have raised concern after a suspected case of Mpox was reported in the region. The patient, whose identity has not been disclosed, is said to be undergoing medical evaluation and monitoring while samples have been taken to the Kenya Medical Research Institute for confirmation.
The county health department has urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, noting that preventive measures are being enforced to avoid possible spread. Awareness campaigns on hygiene, early symptom detection, and reporting suspected cases have also been launched.
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral disease that causes fever, rashes, body aches, and in some cases severe complications. The World Health Organization has previously warned of sporadic outbreaks in Africa and called for stronger surveillance systems.
Authorities in West Pokot say they are working with the Ministry of Health and other partners to strengthen preparedness, even as residents are encouraged not to panic until test results confirm the case.
Would you like me to also add background on Kenya’s past Mpox alerts and how the government responded?
