CONSTRUCTION works at Globe and Phoenix Primary School in Kwekwe are nearing completion, with the contractor expressing confidence that the project will be finalised by the end of next month.
The new school, being constructed at a cost of US$600 000, comprises seven classroom blocks, an administration block, and an ablution facility. It will also include special amenities to cater to learners with disabilities.
“I am glad that we have started fitting the windows in the buildings. Since this place is mountainous, we are putting a ramp for people with disabilities and steps on the other side,” FW Construction and Engineering’s Project Director, Mr Charles Vanderra said.
The community cannot help but marvel at the unfolding progress.
“I am excited about the speed at which our new school is being built. The decommissioning of our old school was a blessing in disguise as we now boast of the best school in Kwekwe,” a community member noted.
“Our Children used to face challenges, especially during the rainy season. Now we are looking forward to our children having a safe learning environment,” another added.
The government is equally excited by the progress at the facility, which is a result of collaboration between the church and the central government.
“I must also emphasise that this timeless wisdom resonates with particular tenderness as we reflect on the journey of Globe and Phoenix Primary School. A journey that epitomises resilience, collective action, and commitment to securing a brighter future for our children. Our presence here reaffirms the vision and steadfast commitment of President Emmerson Mnangagwa to sustainable development and improved education as espoused in the National Development Strategy 1,” Special Advisor to the President on Monitoring Implementation of Government Programmes, Dr Joram Gumbo said.
The Globe and Phoenix Primary School was decommissioned in 2023 after one of the classrooms collapsed due to illegal mining activities in the area, prompting government and school authorities to partner in reconstructing the learning institution.
