South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) President Gideon Sam says the Durban 2022 Commonwealth Games seeks to boost the skills of young people in South Africa.

Sam says that after the Confederation studied the government’s National Development Plan (NDP), they have realised that skills and young people are at the centre of the plan.

“Having studied the NDP and everything within the departments of our government, we looked at what is important to them and we have seen its skills and young people. The Nation of Champions looks at how we can enhance their skills within the seven years left till 2022,” says Sam.

In the same breath Gauteng MEC for Economic Development Lebogang Maile, says they have launched the ‘Tshepo 500 000 programme’, which aims at assisting young people.

The programme will aid young people with various skills including entrepreneurship opportunities.

He adds that about 27 000 young people are already part of the programme.

Maile says “We have enlisted about 27 000 young people for the programme and we hope we will reach 100 000 by next year March.”

Congress of the South African Students(Cosas) Khulekani Skhosana has expressed his disappointment at the lack of sports development in township schools. He says this results to the use of drugs by young people.
