We Call on the Security Council to end the illegal Occupation of our Country by Morocco” (Minister of Foreign Affairs)

– In a statement made , to the Sahrawi Press Agency “SPS”, in response to a question on what does the Sahrawi Republic expect from the Security Council meeting scheduled for tomorrow, April 21,  Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Salek, Minister of Foreign Affairs declared that ” it becomes necessary for the UN Security Council to urgently accelerate the process aimed at ending the Moroccan occupation and thus close the chapter on the decolonization of Western Sahara, after thirty years of obstruction by Morocco towards the application of the agreement signed with the Saharawi side, under the auspices of the United Nations in 1991, because certain of the impossibility of gaining the referendum. “

“Under these conditions, the occupation by the Sahrawi Republic of its seat at the United Nations, as is already the case at the level of the African Union, becomes the logical response politically because it is historically inevitable. It is not only a legitimate and natural right, but it has become, in front of Morocco’s rejection of the self-determination referendum, the only means likely to end the Sahrawi-Moroccan conflict. “

The minister added: “The Security Council is legally, politically and even morally bound, before the Saharawi people and the international community, to assume its responsibilities in accordance with the United Nations Charter, its own responsibilities but also to the legal nature of the Saharawi question, to take the necessary and sufficient measures to guarantee the Saharawi people the enjoyment of their legitimate rights recognized by all international and regional organizations, by putting an end to their suffering and to the systematic violations that the Morocco continues to commit in the occupied territories. “

Mr. Ould Salek also underlines that: “Since Morocco is unable to fulfill its commitments signed under the supervision of the United Nations Security Council; it is up to the UNSC, as guarantor of the agreement between the two parties, to conclude that the situation cannot tolerate further delay after thirty years of waiting”, adding that it “is impossible, after the assault of November 13th, 2020, that things can remain as they were in the past”.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs affirms that: “The SADR declares itself ready to start direct negotiations with its neighbor, the Kingdom of Morocco, with the aim of reaching a peaceful, just and final solution to the conflict in accordance with article 4 of the Constitutive Act of the African Union, the decision of the extraordinary summit “Silencing the guns” and the decision of the Peace and Security Council as well as the relevant resolutions of the African Union.”

He stressed that: “The transgression of international borders by the Kingdom of Morocco, its intransigence in continuing the occupation by force of a large part of our country and its refusal to apply the agreement signed with us are the cause of the return back to square one.”

In this regard, the Minister of Foreign Affairs declares that: “The Sahrawi Republic holds the Kingdom of Morocco responsible for the disastrous consequences which will inevitably result from the continuation of the expansionist war against our people. Furthermore, the Sahrawi Republic recalls, with great regret, that without the blatant complicity with Moroccan aggression, the North West African region could have enjoyed peace and security for decade. “
