President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said on Wednesday that a new bridge that intersects with the Taha Hussein Axis in the Fifth Settlement district should be named after Olympic champion Feryal Ashraf, the Egyptian presidency announced. The move comes in recognition of Ashraf’s athletic achievements at the Tokyo Olympics.

Ashraf won Egypt’s only gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. The Egyptian karateka won the gold in the Kumite +61kg event after beating her Azerbaijani opponent Irina Zaretska in the final.

Ashraf is the first Egyptian, African and Arab woman to win the gold medal in the Karate Kumite +61kg event in the Olympics.

Other bridges and axes will also be named after Olympic champions, the presidency spokesman said.

The president also instructed authorities to name a new axis in Maadi after late Housing Minister Hasaballah El-Kafraway, who passed away last week, and a new bridge in the Fifth Settlement after the late vice president and head of Egyptian General Intelligence Service Omar Suleiman.
