Federal High Court Declares Dethronement of 15th Emir of Kano Illegal

In a landmark ruling, the Federal High Court has declared the dethronement of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, illegal. The presiding judge, Justice Abdullahi Liman, delivered the judgment, stating that the removal of Aminu Ado Bayero did not adhere to legal standards.

Justice Liman further ruled that the reappointment of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano is invalid. This decision effectively nullifies Sanusi II’s reinstallation as Emir and calls into question the legitimacy of his leadership.

In a significant move, the court also invalidated all activities and decisions made following the enactment of the Kano Emirate Council Repeal Law 2024. The invalidation of this law, which had brought about substantial changes to the structure and governance of the Kano Emirate, signals a major shift in the ongoing legal and political landscape of the region.

Moreover, the court has approved the respondents’ request to suspend the legal proceedings until the case is reviewed and decided by the Court of Appeal. This suspension indicates that the current judgment is not final and is subject to further judicial scrutiny.

Adding to the complexity of the case, Justice Liman has ordered the relocation of the case to the Federal High Court. This change in jurisdiction is likely to impact the management and progression of the case moving forward.

This ruling marks a critical juncture in the legal battles surrounding the leadership of the Kano Emirate. The Court of Appeal’s forthcoming decisions will be pivotal in determining the final outcome of this high-profile case.
