The Malian transitional government announced on Friday that it has declared a “state of national disaster” in response to widespread flooding caused by recent heavy rains.
Since the onset of the rainy season in June, approximately 7,077 households across the country have been affected by the floods, resulting in 47,374 people being displaced or impacted, according to the government’s statement.
Following an extraordinary Cabinet meeting, a decree was issued by Assimi Goita, the transitional president, allocating 4 billion CFA francs (approximately US$6.8 million) to address the crisis. This funding is intended to aid in managing the “natural disaster” and its repercussions.
Daoud Aly Mohammedine, the Minister of Security and Civil Protection, emphasized the significance of the decision, stating that it enables the mobilization of all state resources to assist and protect those affected by the various disasters.
