UN Chief Calls for Inclusive AI to Benefit All.

On Tuesday, the UN Secretary-General emphasized the need for global cooperation in harnessing the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI), cautioning that unequal access could worsen global inequalities.

“AI capabilities are currently concentrated within a few powerful companies and even fewer countries. Meanwhile, many nations face significant challenges in accessing AI tools,” António Guterres stated at a forum on AI capacity building in Shanghai, China.

Bridging this gap is crucial, especially given AI’s potential to advance sustainable development. With many Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) lagging, AI could play a pivotal role in revitalizing the development agenda. “To fully leverage AI’s potential, international cooperation and solidarity are essential,” Mr. Guterres added.

Uneven Distribution of Risks

The UN chief also highlighted that the risks associated with AI are as unevenly distributed as its benefits. “Without proper safeguards, AI could exacerbate inequalities and digital divides, disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable,” he warned. “We must seize this historic opportunity to establish inclusive governance of AI for the benefit of all humanity.”

Opportunities for Inclusive Governance

Mr. Guterres pointed to the upcoming Summit of the Future, where governments are expected to endorse a new Global Digital Compact, as a critical platform to achieve this goal. He also underscored ongoing efforts across the UN system.

For example, the UN’s High-level Advisory Body on AI is set to release its final report this month, which will include recommendations such as creating an AI Capacity Development Network, establishing a Global AI Fund for SDGs, and developing a Global Data Framework to support local AI ecosystems.
