President Kagame Arrives in Samoa for CHOGM 2024, Set to Deliver Final Remarks as Outgoing Chair

President Paul Kagame of Rwanda has arrived in Samoa for the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), where he will deliver his final address as the outgoing Chair-in-Office of the Commonwealth. Kagame’s leadership of the 56-member organization has been marked by efforts to foster global cooperation, economic growth, and sustainable development across the Commonwealth nations.

During his tenure, Kagame focused on key issues such as climate action, trade facilitation, youth empowerment, and digital transformation. Under his leadership, the Commonwealth has also strengthened its role in addressing pressing global challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic recovery, climate resilience, and inclusive economic development.

As he passes on the chairmanship, Kagame is expected to reflect on Rwanda’s accomplishments within the Commonwealth, particularly through initiatives such as hosting CHOGM 2022 in Kigali, which reinvigorated discussions around equitable vaccine distribution and post-pandemic recovery. He will also emphasize the need for continued solidarity and innovation among member states to address future challenges.

Leaders from across the Commonwealth, including heads of state and government, are attending the Samoa meeting to discuss global priorities such as sustainable development, trade, and youth engagement. Kagame’s final remarks are expected to set the tone for the incoming Chair, outlining the path forward for the Commonwealth in the years ahead.
