Botswana Diamonds Secures Environmental Approval for Kalahari Drilling

Botswana Diamonds plc has received environmental clearance to initiate drilling operations on its newly discovered anomalies in the Kalahari Desert, a critical step in advancing its diamond exploration projects. The approval paves the way for the company to further evaluate two key kimberlite targets near its flagship KX36 project.

The KX36 site, a 3.5-hectare kimberlite pipe, already boasts significant resources of 17.9 million tonnes at 35 carats per hundred tonnes (cpht) in the indicated category and an additional 6.7 million tonnes at 36 cpht in the inferred category. The site’s diamond valuation is estimated at $65 to $107 per carat. These high-quality reserves position the Kalahari as a promising diamond production hub.

The newly identified anomalies, measuring 12 hectares and 6 hectares respectively, have been described as having strong magnetic and gravity responses, indicative of kimberlite formations. The anomalies are located approximately six kilometers south of KX36, suggesting they could add substantial resources to Botswana Diamonds’ portfolio. The planned drilling will target these anomalies with five strategically placed boreholes once logistical preparations are complete.

Chairman John Teeling expressed optimism, highlighting the region’s potential to become a major diamond-producing area. He noted that while exploration in the diamond sector is a long-term endeavor, structural changes in the global diamond market favor Botswana’s premium-quality gems.

The exploration also has implications for the Ghaghoo Mine, situated just 60 kilometers from KX36. Previously under care and maintenance, Ghaghoo could benefit from enhanced resource integration driven by new discoveries.

This approval reinforces Botswana’s standing as a premier diamond exploration destination, with Botswana Diamonds leveraging its dual listing on the London AIM and Botswana Stock Exchange to attract international investment and expertise.

Drilling is expected to commence promptly following the environmental study’s findings, marking a pivotal moment in Botswana Diamonds’ strategy to unlock the full potential of the Kalahari region.
