President Ramaphosa Backs Multiparty Approach to Basic Education Laws Amendment Act

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed the importance of a multiparty process in shaping the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Act. Speaking at a recent parliamentary briefing, Ramaphosa emphasized the act’s potential to transform education and highlighted the need for collaboration among political stakeholders.

The BELA Act aims to address critical challenges in South Africa’s education system by introducing reforms on issues such as language policy, school governance, and learner admissions. The legislation has sparked debates, with some parties praising its inclusivity and modernization, while others argue it infringes on school autonomy.

President Ramaphosa stressed that a consultative, multiparty approach is vital to ensure the act reflects the diverse needs of the nation. Education is the cornerstone of our democracy and economic future. We cannot afford to politicize this process; it requires unity and shared commitment, he said.

One of the act’s key proposals involves granting provincial departments more oversight in school admissions, a move aimed at addressing inequalities. Critics, however, worry this could undermine the authority of school governing bodies. The language policy revisions, particularly regarding the promotion of indigenous languages, have also drawn mixed reactions.

Ramaphosa called for a balanced dialogue, urging lawmakers to focus on the act’s overarching goal: improving access to quality education. The BELA Act is not just a legal framework; it is a blueprint for an inclusive, equitable education system, he remarked.

Stakeholders from civil society, educators, and parent associations have been actively involved in the legislative process, reflecting the multiparty commitment Ramaphosa advocates. Analysts believe the act’s success hinges on effective implementation and the capacity to address concerns without compromising its intent.

As parliamentary discussions continue, the president’s endorsement of a unified approach sends a strong message about the government’s dedication to strengthening South Africa’s education system through collaboration and shared vision.
