Lamborghini Delays EV Debut to 2029, Citing Market Readiness Concerns

Lamborghini has announced that its first fully electric vehicle (EV) will debut in 2029, pushing back its previously anticipated release timeline. The decision comes as the luxury automaker evaluates market readiness and technological advancements, ensuring the vehicle aligns with Lamborghini’s high-performance standards and customer expectations.

Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann confirmed the shift during a recent industry briefing, highlighting that while the company remains committed to electrification, the current market conditions and customer demand for EV supercars require a more strategic timeline.

Lamborghini’s electric vision will not be rushed, Winkelmann stated. Our focus is on delivering an electric car that meets the essence of our brand performance, design, and driving emotion. The market for ultra-luxury EVs is still maturing, and we believe 2029 is the optimal time to introduce our first electric Lamborghini.

The decision reflects broader challenges in the high-performance EV segment, where automakers face pressure to balance cutting-edge electric technology with the traditional driving experience expected from luxury and supercar brands. While Lamborghini’s competitors, such as Ferrari and McLaren, are pushing ahead with hybrid or EV models, Lamborghini is taking a more cautious approach, prioritizing quality over speed-to-market.

The Italian automaker has already begun its transition to hybrid powertrains as part of its broader electrification strategy, dubbed Direzione Cor Tauri. By 2025, Lamborghini plans to offer a hybrid version of every model in its lineup, starting with the recently unveiled Revuelto plug-in hybrid. The company aims to reduce its carbon footprint while maintaining the iconic performance that defines the brand.

Industry analysts note that Lamborghini’s delay to 2029 is a calculated move. The luxury EV segment remains in its infancy, with challenges surrounding battery technology, weight management, and delivering the sensory experience like engine sound and feedback that enthusiasts expect from brands like Lamborghini.

The global demand for electric vehicles is rising, driven by emissions regulations and consumer interest in sustainable mobility. However, Lamborghini’s niche market of high-performance supercars presents unique challenges. Potential buyers in the segment are still warming up to the idea of all-electric models, with many preferring hybrid options that preserve aspects of internal combustion engines.

Lamborghini has a reputation to protect, said automotive analyst Mark Stevens. While the EV market is growing, ultra-luxury supercar buyers are discerning. Lamborghini’s cautious approach allows them to enter the space at the right time, with technology that truly reflects their identity.

For now, Lamborghini will continue developing its hybrid lineup, with the next-generation Urus SUV and other models adopting hybrid technology. The company expects these vehicles to bridge the gap until the fully electric model arrives.

Customers and fans of the brand have expressed mixed reactions. While some welcome Lamborghini’s commitment to quality and performance, others were eager to see the automaker join the EV race sooner. One Lamborghini owner remarked, I understand their decision Lamborghini is about perfection, and if they need time to get an EV right, so be it.

Despite the delay, Lamborghini remains focused on its long-term goal of sustainability and innovation. By the time its first EV hits the market in 2029, the company expects advancements in battery efficiency, performance technology, and customer readiness to align with its vision for the future of supercars.

As the luxury automotive sector evolves, Lamborghini’s strategy highlights the balancing act between tradition, innovation, and market demand, ensuring its electric debut makes an unmistakable impact.
