KZN Disaster Management Teams on High Alert Amid Heavy Rains

Disaster management teams in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) are on high alert as torrential rains lash parts of the province, raising concerns about flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage. The South African Weather Service has issued warnings for localized flooding in low-lying areas, prompting swift action from emergency responders.

Since the downpour began, several regions, including Durban, Pietermaritzburg, and the coastal areas, have reported significant rainfall. Rivers and dams are nearing capacity, with authorities closely monitoring water levels to prevent overflow. Communities in vulnerable zones have been urged to remain vigilant and evacuate if necessary.

MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Bongi Sithole-Moloi, confirmed that disaster management teams are stationed across the province to respond swiftly to emergencies. Our teams are on standby to assist affected residents, and we are working closely with municipalities to mitigate risks, she stated.

Early reports indicate waterlogged roads, damaged homes, and disruptions to electricity supply in some areas. Emergency shelters have been set up to accommodate displaced families, while rescue teams equipped with boats and medical supplies are on standby.

Residents have been advised to avoid crossing flooded roads and to report emergencies to the provincial disaster hotline. Schools in affected areas have been closed as a precaution, while businesses are bracing for potential disruptions.

The heavy rains are part of a weather system expected to persist for the next few days. Authorities have urged communities to heed warnings and stay updated through official channels. The safety of our residents is our priority, and we encourage everyone to act responsibly during this period, Sithole-Moloi added.

KwaZulu-Natal has faced devastating floods in recent years, making preparedness a key focus for authorities. While the region is no stranger to adverse weather, the current situation underscores the importance of proactive disaster management and community cooperation.

The situation remains fluid, with updates expected as weather patterns evolve. Residents are urged to exercise caution and prioritize safety during this challenging time.
