Council of Churches Demands Accountability for Killings in Sudan Amid Ongoing Conflict

The Council of Churches has issued a fervent call for justice and accountability in response to the escalating violence in Sudan, where ongoing conflict has claimed thousands of lives. In a strongly worded statement, the council condemned the killings of civilians, urging both Sudanese authorities and the international community to act decisively to end the bloodshed.

Sudan has been embroiled in a brutal conflict since April 2023, primarily between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The violence, which has displaced millions, is marked by reports of extrajudicial killings, sexual violence, and attacks on humanitarian workers. The Council of Churches expressed grave concern over the targeting of vulnerable populations, including women and children, in what they described as acts of inhumanity that shock the conscience.

In their statement, faith leaders called for:

Independent Investigations: The establishment of international and regional inquiries to investigate alleged war crimes and human rights abuses.

Sanctions on Perpetrators: Targeted sanctions against individuals and entities responsible for the violence.

Humanitarian Access: Immediate measures to allow humanitarian aid to reach affected areas without interference.

Dialogue and Peacebuilding: A renewed focus on mediation efforts to bring an end to hostilities.

Rev. James Okello, a prominent church leader, emphasized the moral duty of global leaders to intervene. Silence and inaction in the face of these atrocities are unacceptable. We must stand in solidarity with the people of Sudan and demand justice for the innocent lives lost, he said.

The statement also highlighted the impact of the conflict on religious minorities and sacred sites, many of which have been desecrated or destroyed. Churches in neighboring countries have stepped up efforts to support refugees fleeing the violence, but the humanitarian needs far outstrip available resources.

The Council of Churches’ appeal comes as international organizations, including the United Nations and the African Union, face criticism for failing to halt the violence. Observers warn that without decisive action, Sudan risks descending further into chaos, with dire implications for regional stability.

As the world watches, the Council’s call serves as a sobering reminder of the human cost of inaction. Faith leaders continue to pray for peace while urging leaders to uphold justice and protect the dignity of all Sudanese people.
