United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Sudan, expressing deep concern over the escalating conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). In a recent communication with Sudanese leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Guterres emphasized the urgent need for a political solution to the crisis.
The conflict, which began in April 2023, has resulted in significant civilian casualties and widespread displacement. According to UN reports, over 25 million people are experiencing acute hunger, and more than 11 million have been displaced, making it the largest displacement crisis globally.
Guterres reiterated the UN’s commitment to supporting Sudan’s transition to a civilian-led government and called on all parties to respect international humanitarian law, ensuring the safety of civilians and humanitarian workers. He also urged the Sudanese authorities to facilitate unhindered humanitarian access and cooperate with international partners to address the crisis.
The UN continues to engage with regional organizations and international partners to mediate a peaceful resolution to the conflict and to provide necessary humanitarian assistance to those affected.
As the situation remains dire, the international community’s support and concerted efforts are crucial in bringing an end to the violence and restoring peace to Sudan.
