Stanbic Bank Uganda’s Head of Communications, Daniel Agutamba, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Communication Peer Committee under the Uganda Bankers’ Association (UBA), a move widely regarded as a strategic boost for advancing professionalism and innovation in the banking sector’s public relations and stakeholder engagement.
Agutamba, a seasoned communications specialist with more than a decade of experience across media, finance, and corporate strategy, will now lead a team of senior communications professionals representing over 25 commercial banks and financial institutions in Uganda.
The UBA Communication Peer Committee is a vital arm of the association, tasked with coordinating sector-wide communications strategies, managing stakeholder relations, addressing reputational risks, and harmonizing public messaging across Uganda’s banking ecosystem. It also plays a key role in steering campaigns around financial literacy, cyber awareness, customer engagement, and regulatory dialogue.
Speaking shortly after his appointment, Agutamba stated:
“It is an honor to serve in this capacity. The banking sector sits at the heart of Uganda’s economic transformation, and clear, responsible communication is essential to building public trust and promoting financial inclusion. I look forward to working with my peers to shape a unified voice for the industry.”
Agutamba takes over from Wilbrod Owor, UBA’s Executive Director, who praised the incoming chairman’s track record, particularly his role in transforming Stanbic Bank’s external engagement during times of economic uncertainty and digital transition.
Why This Appointment Matters
With increasing digitization of financial services, banks are under more scrutiny than ever before — from regulators, customers, and the public. Communication departments now serve not just as information conduits, but as strategic pillars that shape perceptions, drive trust, and safeguard brands during crises. Agutamba’s leadership is expected to usher in a more agile, transparent, and people-centered approach to financial communications.
According to industry analysts, Uganda’s banking sector is undergoing a shift toward more customer-centric models, and the role of communication has expanded to include behavioral change advocacy, fintech storytelling, ESG alignment, and community engagement. Agutamba’s background in journalism and public relations equips him well to navigate this complex and evolving landscape.
Stanbic Bank’s Continued Influence
This appointment further cements Stanbic Bank’s reputation as a leader in banking innovation and talent development. Already the country’s largest commercial bank by assets, Stanbic has invested heavily in youth banking, entrepreneurship support, women-led business financing, and tech-driven service delivery.
In recent years, Agutamba has been instrumental in the rollout of Stanbic’s “Real People, Real Impact” narrative, a campaign that shifted public perception of banking as a cold, transactional service to a relationship-based platform that supports dreams and communities.
Among the committee’s top priorities for 2025 will be:
- Strengthening public trust in financial systems
- Coordinating unified sector campaigns (e.g., bank fraud awareness, credit transparency)
- Supporting regulatory communication initiatives with the Bank of Uganda
- Promoting ethical PR practices across member institutions
- Training upcoming communications officers within the banking sector
Agutamba is expected to serve a two-year term, during which the committee will also explore partnerships with media houses, fintechs, NGOs, and academic institutions to broaden the sector’s reach and relevance.
Daniel Agutamba’s appointment is not only a win for Stanbic Bank but also a vote of confidence in Uganda’s local talent and the growing role of strategic communication in Africa’s banking transformation. Under his leadership, the UBA Communication Peer Committee is poised to become a central force in shaping responsible, transparent, and impactful financial messaging across the nation.
