The African National Congress (ANC) is grieving the loss of one of its veteran leaders, Lungile Mnganga-Gcabashe, who served as the Deputy President of the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL). She passed away peacefully at her home in Westville, KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday, May 18, 2025, at the age of 64.
Mnganga-Gcabashe was a longstanding member of the ANC and a dedicated public servant who spent much of her life championing the rights of women and the upliftment of disadvantaged communities. She held various leadership roles within the party and government, including Member of Parliament, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Tourism, and previously as a senior member of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature.
Known for her unwavering commitment to the liberation struggle, women empowerment, and social justice, Mnganga-Gcabashe was widely respected by colleagues across the political spectrum. Her contributions to South Africa’s democratic institutions and her role in shaping gender equity policies left a lasting impact on the country’s legislative landscape.
The ANC described her passing as a profound loss to the movement, especially at a time when strong, principled female leadership remains crucial to the country’s progress. Tributes have poured in from political leaders, civil society organizations, and community members, all hailing her as a courageous, humble, and dedicated leader.
She is survived by her family, who have requested privacy during this difficult time. Memorial and funeral arrangements will be announced by the ANC in due course. The party has extended its deepest condolences to her loved ones, vowing to continue her legacy of service and commitment to justice.
