Ethiopia Launches FaydaPass to Promote Financial Inclusion

In a major step toward strengthening digital finance, Ethiopia has officially launched FaydaPass, a new digital wallet designed to promote financial inclusion and expand access to secure digital services nationwide.

Unveiled at a high-profile event in Addis Ababa, FaydaPass is directly integrated with the country’s national digital ID system, known as Fayda. The digital wallet aims to make everyday transactions more secure, convenient, and accessible, especially for the millions of Ethiopians who remain underserved by traditional banking systems.

Government officials emphasized that FaydaPass is more than just a payment tool.

it represents a broader shift toward building a trusted digital ecosystem that connects citizens with essential services across sectors like healthcare, education, social welfare, and telecommunications.

“FaydaPass is a key pillar in our national strategy to ensure every citizen has access to formal financial tools,” said a government spokesperson. “By linking digital identity with financial access, we are breaking down the barriers that have excluded too many people for too long.”

The launch is part of Ethiopia’s wider commitment to digital transformation, with the goal of creating a seamless and inclusive financial infrastructure. The platform is expected to help boost digital literacy and reduce reliance on cash-based transactions, particularly in rural and remote areas.

Officials also hinted at future partnerships with fintech companies and service providers to expand the wallet’s utility, including mobile banking features, bill payments, and digital government services.

FaydaPass is now available for enrollment, with a phased rollout expected to reach millions of Ethiopians over the coming months.
