Federal Minister for Energy Awais Leghari stated that the government’s effort is to reduce the power tariff on a sustainable basis, and a revolution in alternative energy sources has arrived in Pakistan.
In a statement, Awais Leghari said that several measures have been taken to reduce electricity prices, and electricity demand has decreased over the past two to three years. The government has tried to provide relief to consumers.
The Energy Minister said that significant reforms have been made in the power sector over the past year, and the industrial sector’s tariff has been reduced by 30%.
Earlier, Awais Leghari had stated that expensive electricity projects totaling 7000 megawatts had been scrapped, and a ten-year electricity plan has been approved.
He mentioned that by ending costly power plants, major relief has been provided to the public. The government will no longer purchase electricity, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the electricity planning for the next ten years.
He had said that if the old policy had continued, consumers would have had to bear an additional burden of 4,743 billion rupees, but with the new planning, a saving of 4,743 billion rupees is possible.
He said that the single-buyer model and cost-plus tariff have been abolished, and savings of 2,790 billion rupees will be achieved through new electricity purchase agreements.
