CHINA-IN a significant move to bolster unity among developing nations, China and 53 African countries, alongside the African Union Commission, convened in Changsha to reaffirm their commitment to the Global South.

This gathering underscored their shared vision for a more equitable international order, emphasising multilateralism, economic cooperation, and mutual respect.

Both parties pledged to uphold true multilateralism, emphasising the importance of a U.N.-centred international system and a WTO-centred multilateral trading system.

They aim to make economic globalisation more open, inclusive, mutually beneficial, and balanced.

China announced plans to expand zero-tariff treatment for 100% of tariff lines to all 53 African countries with diplomatic relations, excluding Eswatini.

This initiative aims to boost trade in goods, enhance skills and technical training, and promote quality African products in the Chinese market.

The declaration emphasizes cooperation in key areas such as green industry, e-commerce, science and technology, and artificial intelligence.

Both sides aim to deepen cooperation in security, finance, and the rule of law to promote high-quality development.

For Zimbabwe, this declaration presents opportunities to strengthen economic ties with China, particularly in areas like agriculture, infrastructure, and trade.

The commitment to zero-tariff access for Zimbabwean products to the Chinese market could enhance export prospects, while collaborative efforts in technology and education could foster sustainable development.
