Angola and United States Strengthen Energy Ties in High-Level Talks

Angola and the United States have agreed to deepen their energy cooperation following a high-level meeting in Washington, D.C., where senior officials from both nations set a roadmap for expanded collaboration in oil, gas, renewable energy, and critical mineral development.

The Angolan delegation, led by Secretary of State for Oil and Gas José Alexandre Barroso, met with U.S. government officials and energy sector leaders to discuss key projects that align with Angola’s energy transition goals and the U.S.’s strategic interests in African energy markets.

At the center of the talks were plans to boost American investment in Angola’s oil and gas sector, while also supporting large-scale renewable energy initiatives. Notably, new solar power plants with a combined capacity of 500 megawatts are expected to be developed under joint efforts, helping Angola diversify its energy mix and expand access to electricity in rural areas.

The two countries also discussed collaboration on infrastructure for critical minerals essential for clean energy technologies marking a new chapter in their partnership as global demand for these resources rises.

Angola highlighted its surplus electricity generation capacity and ambition to become a regional energy exporter. Discussions included strategies to strengthen its power grid and explore cross-border electricity trade with neighboring countries.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to environmental responsibility, with Angola pledging to align future oil and gas developments with global sustainability standards.

The meeting reflects growing momentum in the U.S.–Angola Energy Security Dialogue, which aims to promote mutual investment, secure energy supply chains, and support climate resilience in both countries. Officials on both sides described the renewed cooperation as a long-term strategic move that will generate jobs, stimulate innovation, and position Angola as a regional leader in the evolving global energy landscape.
