Wilaya of Boujdour, June 17, 2025 (SPS) – In a heartfelt ceremony held Tuesday, the President of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Brahim Ghali, paid tribute to a group of martyrs and veteran freedom fighters in recognition of their unwavering dedication and sacrifices in the struggle for Sahrawi independence.
The solemn event formed part of a broader intellectual symposium organized by the Sahrawi Youth Union (UJSARIO), commemorating the 55th anniversary of the historic Zemla Uprising. The symposium brought together a cross-section of Sahrawi society, including political figures, veterans of the liberation movement, youth activists, and members of the general public.
During the ceremony, President Ghali emphasized the enduring significance of the sacrifices made by Sahrawi martyrs, noting that their legacy continues to inspire new generations in the ongoing quest for national self-determination. He also praised the role of freedom fighters who, over decades, have contributed to building and defending the institutions of the Sahrawi state under occupation and in exile.
“The blood of our martyrs and the efforts of our fighters will forever remain the foundation of our resistance and the symbol of our legitimate struggle,” President Ghali declared. “Today, we honor not only their past sacrifices but also reaffirm our collective commitment to achieving the aspirations they gave their lives for.”
The symposium featured presentations, discussions, and exhibitions highlighting the historical and political importance of the Zemla Uprising—a pivotal moment in 1970 that marked the beginning of mass political mobilization against colonial rule in Western Sahara.
As the Sahrawi people continue to seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict and the full implementation of their right to self-determination, events like this serve as a reminder of the resilience and determination of a nation committed to freedom, justice, and dignity.
