THE government says it remains committed to improving the status and welfare of refugees in the country by strengthening the asylum system and integrating refugees into national systems.
With over 17,000 refugees residing in Zimbabwe, goverment continues to uphold inclusive and progressive policies that align with the national philosophy of leaving no one behind.
Speaking ahead of the 2025 World Refugee Day commemorations, the Deputy Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Honourable Mercy Dinha emphasised government’s commitment to expanding access to essential services, including documentation, education, and income-generating opportunities.
The Deputy Minister also highlighted plans to transform Tongogara Refugee Camp in Chipinge into a service-oriented settlement.
“As the government, we are doing a great deal to ensure that refugees are protected and enjoy improved living conditions. The majority are housed at Tongogara Refugee Camp, while others have been integrated into local communities through employment and entrepreneurship. At the camp, sustainable agricultural projects are underway to promote self-sufficiency, reducing reliance on donations.”
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ Country Representative, Mr Boubacar Bamba commended the government’s efforts in supporting refugees.
“The work being done by the government is evident and appreciated because integration of refugees is critical. Having sustainable agricultural projects is crucial so that they do not rely on donor funds because these have been cut already. Efforts to ease access to documentation are also there and should be applauded.”
The 2025 World Refugee Day will be observed this Friday, June 20, at Tongogara Refugee Camp in Chipinge District, Manicaland Province.
The event will be held under the theme: ‘Solidarity with Refugees.’
