Ethiopian Ambassador Binalf Andualem Meets with Former President Donald Trump to Discuss Bilateral Ties

Ethiopia’s Ambassador to the United States, Binalf Andualem, held a high-level meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach this week. The meeting, described as warm and constructive, focused on strengthening economic ties, expanding trade connections, and exploring opportunities for private-sector engagement between the two nations.

Ambassador Binalf began the conversation by thanking Trump for his continued interest in Ethiopia’s growth and stability. Topics included expanding technology and agriculture investment, fostering diaspora contributions to development, and highlighting Ethiopia’s regional leadership role in the Horn of Africa.

Trump expressed optimism about the potential for U.S. businesses to play a stronger role in Ethiopian infrastructure and energy sectors. He also reflected on his time in office, noting that he welcomed partnerships contributing to American economic interests while supporting African growth.

Although the encounter was informal and outside of official diplomatic channels, both sides expressed confidence it could help build momentum ahead of any future U.S. administration’s engagement with Ethiopia.

After the meeting, Ambassador Binalf said the discussion was “insightful and forward-looking.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining open communication and exploring public private initiatives especially in areas like infrastructure, energy, and consumer goods.

Observers say the meeting underscores Ethiopia’s proactive diplomacy in cultivating U.S. engagement and underscores the enduring impact of former presidential figures in shaping broader international relations.
