THE Second Republic continues to ensure improved livelihoods in rural communities through intensifying agriculture projects, with the Chirogwe community in Chivi being the latest to benefit.
Under the government’s rural empowerment agenda, the Chirogwe Irrigation Scheme has received a major boost following the installation of a solar-powered borehole, a development spearheaded by Chivi Central legislator, Honourable Xavier Maoneke.
The newly installed infrastructure is expected to support all-year-round horticultural production while simultaneously improving access to safe drinking water for both agricultural and domestic purposes.
The initiative has sparked renewed hope among villagers, particularly youth and women, who are now actively pursuing horticultural ventures to bolster food security and improve household incomes.
“This area is known for being very dry, and our community gardens often collapse during the summer season. Today, we are happy because the new borehole means we can now undertake agricultural projects throughout the year,” one villager said.
“This solar-powered borehole brings hope for youth and women-led projects. Even our livestock now have access to water, which will improve productivity. We are grateful to President Mnangagwa for ensuring that no one and no place is left behind,” another added.
Chivi Central legislator, Honourable Xavier Maoneke, who commissioned the project, encouraged the community to take full advantage of development programmes being rolled out under the Second Republic.
“We are walking in the footsteps of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who remains committed to inclusive development. This solarised borehole presents an opportunity for sustainable horticultural production. If taken seriously, it can generate income and transform lives. Let us seize these opportunities for improved livelihoods.”
Honourable Maoneke also donated fencing materials and agricultural inputs to support the Chirogwe scheme as well as other initiatives in the neighbouring Tende area, while the elderly and other disadvantaged groups received food hampers and blankets.
