Somalia Receives Turkish T-129 ATAK Attack Helicopters in Military Upgrade

Somalia has officially received a delivery of Turkish-made T-129 ATAK attack helicopters, significantly enhancing its ability to carry out precision strikes against militant threats, particularly the Al-Shabaab insurgency.

The shipment, which includes three T-129 ATAK helicopters and two utility helicopters for naval operations, arrived recently at Aden Adde International Airport. The arrival marks Somalia’s first acquisition of dedicated attack helicopters and is seen as a major milestone in its military modernization efforts.

The helicopters are part of a broader defense agreement signed between Somalia and Turkey, which includes a 10-year military cooperation deal. Under this partnership, Turkey has also supplied drones and provided extensive military training for Somali pilots. The T-129 pilots completed months of training in Turkey before the delivery.

Each T-129 is equipped with advanced targeting systems, guided rockets, and anti-tank missiles, making them ideal for both urban and rural combat scenarios. The helicopters are expected to provide close air support for Somali troops and boost counterterrorism operations, particularly in regions difficult to reach by ground.

This development comes at a time when Somalia is preparing for national elections and facing renewed threats from insurgent groups. The introduction of these helicopters is expected to improve rapid response capabilities and offer greater air dominance in key regions.

In addition to equipment deliveries, Turkey has also deployed military advisors to assist in training and operational support, reinforcing the long-standing defense ties between both nations.

The new fleet is expected to be deployed soon in active operations as Somalia continues its fight to stabilize the country and reduce reliance on foreign peacekeeping forces.
