It is with profound sorrow yet deep gratitude for a life of abiding faith that we pause to reflect on the remarkable journey of Dolores “Dodie” Osteen (October 22, 1933 – July 30, 2025). Known affectionately to millions as “Mama Dodie,” she peacefully passed away of natural causes in her Houston home at the age of 91, leaving behind a legacy of prayer, healing, and hope .
From the earliest days, she infused Lakewood Church with life and love. With her husband, Pastor John Osteen, she co‑founded the ministry on Mother’s Day, May 10, 1959—meeting in a tent, then a humble feed store on Houston’s outskirts—and grew it into one of the world’s most influential houses of worship . Dodie was never merely the pastor’s wife: she was its spiritual anchor, leading prayer services, comforting mourners, and gently shaping a community destined to touch millions.
In 1981, she was diagnosed with metastatic liver cancer and given mere weeks to live. Dodie rejected the prognosis and placed her confidence in prayer. Miraculously, she recovered—and went on to write Healed of Cancer, sharing her testimony of God’s faithfulness. Her courage and testimony would become a beacon, restoring hope in countless lives .
When John Osteen died in January 1999, it was Mama Dodie who encouraged their youngest son, Joel, to step up into leadership. Her unwavering faith and gentle nudging helped Joel accept the role of senior pastor, launching a new era in Lakewood’s global impact. Under his leadership, Lakewood grew from a few thousand in attendance to more than 50,000 and reached millions through television and digital platforms—a testament to the foundation she and John laid .
Her books, her voice, her presence—whether on stage, in hospital rooms, or at someone’s bedside—embodied compassion. She was often seen praying personally with congregants, offering scripture and encouragement. That tenderness was at the core of Lakewood’s identity: “An Oasis of Love in a Troubled World” .
A Life Remembered: In Her Own Spirit
Dolores Osteen was born Dodie Pilgrim in Baytown, Texas, a nursing student who survived polio as a child—an early testimony to resilience. In 1954 she married John Osteen, and they began a ministry partnership that would transform lives. Over six decades she shepherded leaders and laypeople alike, loving children, grandchildren, and congregants across generations .
Through seasons of joy and sorrow, Dodie walked with a steadfast trust in God. She held fast in trial, exuberant in victory, and gracious in all seasons. Even after John’s passing, she remained deeply involved in Lakewood—sharing her testimony, writing, appearing on Christian television, and delighting in the growth of the church she helped start.
Her influence extended far beyond Houston: Christian leaders worldwide joined in tribute. Bishop T.D. Jakes described her as “an angel among us … marked by class, dignity, and humility.” Pastors, gospel singers, and everyday believers echoed the sentiment: Mama Dodie was spiritual family to many .
A Poem for Mama Dodie
In fields of faith she sowed her light,
A gentle warrior in darkest night.
Through cancer’s shadow she arose,
Her healing knelt, her spirit rose.
A mother’s arms in prayer extended,
A legacy of love unended.
May angels guide her into peace,
Where doubt departs and sorrows cease.
