Jumia has introduced a same day delivery to its customers in Lagos, exactly two years after its major competitor, Konga, introduced a similar service in the country.
According to Nicolas Martin, Jumia’s Managing Director, the online retailer’s goal is set to give customers the best online retail experience with its express service delivery.
According to the online portal, this introduction means that customers would be able to receive their order the same day the order was placed through the online retailer; however, customers would have to do so before 1pm during the day.
JUMIA is an African online shopping site where people can purchase and browse through a wide range of electronics, fashion, home appliances, kid’s items and more. The business was founded in 2012 by Co-founders and CEOs, Jeremy Hodara and Sacha Poignonnec with funding from Rocket Internet, and has offices in Nigeria and Egyp
In 2012, Jeremy Hodara and Sacha Poignonnec founded and launched JUMIA, an e-commerce startup with an aim to mimic Amazon’s success by delivering a wide range of items, from toys to generators across Africa. Shortly after the startup of the business, JUMIA launched in five growing countries which include: Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco, Kenya andCote d’Ivoire. In 2013, the business received $35 million in Series B funding from Millicom to contribute towards its expansion in its domestic market and the move into a new 90,000 square foot warehouse located in Lagos. JUMIA finished a great year in 2013 by winning the title of the Best New Retail Launch. In 2014, Jumia extended its services toUganda enabling people to shop online and have products delivered to this region.

Competition
Jumia’s most notable competitors are Konga in Nigeria and Souq in Egypt. In both countries, all three online retailers compete for online shoppers through competitive prices and targeted marketing. In part, this has led to the launch of price aggregators such as Yaoota.com to guide users through the increasing number of online products.
Partnership
In October 2012, Jumia announced its partnership with Mobinil the Egyptian company for mobile services. The partnership agreement between JUMIA Egypt and Mobinil consists of four main rules which include: The partnership agreement between JUMIA Egypt and Mobinil consists of the following:
- Mobinil provide JUMIA offices and staff with the latest mobile technology solutions, specifically tailored for their business needs
- JUMIA provide Mobinil with products and services to each of the 140 retail stores spread all across Egypt
- JUMIA offer products of Mobinil and telecom products to their customers (i.e. Voice/Data lines, Broadband connectivity devices, smartphones, connectivity data bundles)
- JUMIA offer special rewards for Mobinil customers through the use of a loyalty program
Mobile application
On 26 August 2013, Jumia launched a mobile application in Nigeria, Morocco, Ivory Coast and Kenya that enables customers to make purchases on the online store from anywhere. The mobile app offers a selection of 50,000 products.
