: The domestic airport here wore a festive look on Friday with a grand and emotional welcome accorded to Daniston, a sailor recently freed by Somali pirates after four years of captivity.
Meeting his friends and family, Daniston thanked the Central and State governments. He also thanked the Seafarers’ Association for initiating talks with the government. His sisters, Julita, Creta and Jothi, and brother Rajesh too thanked authorities for aiding his release. His relatives and friends distributied sweets at the airport to celebrate his return. Under medication, Daniston has been advised complete bed rest by doctors for a few weeks.
Father Amaldas, Director of the Stella Maris Seafarers’ Association, who had gone to Mumbai to hold talks with the company that employed Daniston, and top government officials, claimed the delay in the sailors’ release was due to the absence of a stable government in Somalia. He added that the mediation was done through the Kenyan government.
