Post-match comments following Al Ahly’s dramatic victory on Saturday night which allowed them to claim the CAF Confederation Cup as the first Egyptian team to win this trophy.
Al Ahly coach Juan Carlos Garrido became the first Spanish manager to win the CAF Confederation Cup in Africa. Moreover, this championship is his second with Al Ahly, the 2014 Egypt Super Cupagainst arch-rivals Zamalek marked his first with the Reds.
Ahly never lost hope
The Spaniard said following the victory, which was Al Ahly’s first Confederation Cup triumph in history: “We were expecting a last-minute goal. We never lost hope.”
Garrido then commented on goalscorer Emad Meteb: “Emad Meteb is a striker, scoring is his specialty. He was not effective during some periods of the game but eventually, he scored the historical winner,” he said.
Playing through injury
Al Ahly’s second goalkeeper, Ahmed Adel, started this game as Sherif Ekramy is still recovering from his knee injury.
Adel, who suffered an injury in the final’s first leg, spoke about the recurrence of the injury in the return leg: “I suffered from a slight tear in the quadriceps during the first leg in Ivory Coast, I had been recovering from this injury since my return to Cairo.”
“Two days before the match, my injury was not fully treated,” Ahmed Adel added.
“Mr. Garrido asked if I wanted to leave the pitch; we had one sub left and we needed to attack, which is why I decided to withstand the pain, even if I had to play with one leg.
“We thank God for this win,” the goalkeeper concluded.

Al Ahly centre-back Saad Samir also shared his thoughts after the game, he said: “The fans were the driving force behind this win. We had to win for them. This one is for our faithful fans.”

Mohamed Nagy ‘Gedo’, Al Ahly’s injured striker, gave all the credit to the club’s fans: “We would not have won in the last minute if it wasn’t for the fans.”
He tweeted: “This is how valuable the fans are. I beg you [those in charge], let them return to the stadiums.”
He added: “Finals require big players. Congratulations [Emad] Meteb, [Abdallah] El-Said for your return. I congratulate the players, the coaching staff, and the board as well.”
“Ahly are the masters of the world” – Abou-Treika
Al Ahly legend Mohamed Abou-Treika shared his happiness on Twitter by tweeting “Gooooaaaal” as soon as Meteb scored the injury-time winner.
it’s well worth mentioning that this win marked Al Ahly’s 20th international cup, which cements the Red Devils’ place as the most internationally decorated club in the world.
In 2015, Al Ahly will have the chance to win their 21st international trophy as they’ll face ES Sétif,the CAF Champions League winners, in the African Super Cup.
