Parks, beaches and restaurants were popular celebration spots on Thursday.
Meanwhile, scores of people chose to buck the tradition of a big Christmas lunch at home, and instead opted to visit popular sites around picturesque Cape Town.
The V&A Waterfront has been a firm favourite with thousands of people descending on the mall to mark the festivities.
Visitors say the range of activities, including boat rides and entertainment at the amphitheater helped them create long lasting Christmas memories.
Even visitors from the Netherlands had a great time.
Danja Willemsen says: “We went on a pirate ship and it was fun for an hour. It’s a very nice trip, and we’ve got nice pictures. Coming here to South Africa at Christmas time is a wonderful experience. We are from Holland and it gets pretty cold there this time of year. So, we decided to come to South Africa for the sun and sandy beaches. I have four kids and they get bored very easily but there is lots of things to do here to keep them occupied.”
