Ivory Coast Held By Guinea, Cameroon Draw With Mali in African Nations Cup // Côte D’Ivoire Tenue Par La Guinée, Cameroun Dessiner Avec Mali En Coupe Des Nations Africaines

  • Ivory Coast 1-1 Guinea

An entertaining, slightly curious game that leaves both sides with satisfaction and regrets. Guinea were valiant and often slick; they scored a lovely goal and carried a threat throughout but will lament the fact that they could not score a second after Gervinho was sent off. Ivory Coast can congratulate themselves for their comeback – particularly as the equaliser was so good – but will face familiar accusations of failing to harness their full potential. A shrewd change by Herve Renard perhaps helped them improve after Gervinho’s dismissal. They will need to improve again if they are to get past Cameroon and Mali in their next games.

Gervinho was sent off for Ivory Coast as they settled for a point in their opening match.

Ivory Coast had to settle for a point in their opening African Nations Cup Group D match after they drew 1-1 with Guinea and finished the game with 10 men.

Mohamed Yattara stunned Ivory Coast, who are ranked Africa’s third-best side behind Algeria and Tunisia, with his 36th-minute volley before the favourites saw striker Gervinho sent off for hitting Naby Keita in the face.

Second-half substitute Seydou Doumbia gave the subdued crowd something to cheer about with his 72nd-minute equaliser, but…

Tournament favourites Algeria came from behind to beat South Africa 3-1 in their African Cup of Nations opener on Monday.
Algeria has a decidedly French flavour to its African Nations Cup team.

The Africa Cup of Nations is now well underway, and while the tournament is already gripping fans, the resulting player absences are being keenly felt in Europe’s major leagues. Nowhere is this more pronounced than in France, where no less than 52 Ligue 1 players are participating in the tournament in Equatorial Guinea.

Reciprocally, the showpiece itself has a strong French flavour. Thievy Bifouma, born a generous goal kick away from Stade de France, scored Congo’s late equaliser against the…

Volker Finke’s new-look Cameroon side needed a late equaliser to escape with a 1-1 draw from their African Nations Cup opener against Mali.

Mali led through Sambou Yatabare’s 71st-minute goal but New York Red Bulls full-back Ambroise Oyongo hit back for the Indomitable Lions.

Yatabare thought he had won it in stoppage time but his header was correctly disallowed for offside.

Finke has purged the Cameroon squad of many of the central figures from last summer’s abysmal World Cup showing, opting instead…

Long considered a punch line because of his poor form at Arsenal, Gervinho became the puncher at Ivory Coast’s African Nations Cup opener vs. Guinea on Tuesday.

After a nasty foul by Naby Keita, Gervinho responded with a strike of his own, arguably better than any he managed at the Emirates.

It seems unfair to mock Gervinho given some fine form this season for AS Roma, but this foolish decision cost Ivory Coast a…

ESPN FC’s Gab Marcotti breaks down the African Cup of Nations and the favourites of the tournament, which include an experience Tunisia side, Algeria and none other than the Ivory Coast.

Yaya Toure has acknowledged Ivory Coast are not among the top sides at the African Nations Cup as they get their campaign underway on Tuesday.’

Toure, 31, will lead the Elephants into their Group D opener against Guinea in Malabo in the absence of Didier Drogba, who announced he would no longer play for his country last summer.

Twice runners-up in the past five tournaments, Ivory Coast remain one of Africa’s biggest names, and with the likes of Gervinho and Wilfried Bony in their ranks, remain potent…

Tournament favourites Algeria came from behind to beat South Africa 3-1 in their African Cup of Nations opener on Monday.

Senegal opened their African Nations Cup campaign with a dramatic late winner against Ghana in Group C.

Senegal came from behind to beat Ghana 2-1 with a stoppage-time winner on Monday at the African Nations Cup in Mongomo, Equatorial Guinea.

Moussa Sow stole victory right at the end after Senegal had gone behind early and then dominated after that.

Andre Ayew stroked home a 14th-minute penalty for Ghana after Christian Atsu was fouled by Senegal goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul.

But Senegal produced long periods of pressure before Mame Diouf equalised with a second-half header after his initial effort bounced.

South Africa undone by own goal as Algeria battle back to win

Islam Slimani capped Algeria’s victory over South Africa on Monday.

Algeria came from behind to begin their African Nations Cup campaign with a 3-1 victory over South Africa.

After a goalless first half, Thuso Phala gave South Africa the lead but Tokelo Rantie missed a penalty and Thulani Hlatshwayo’s own goal levelled the scores.

Faouzi Ghoulam and Islam Slimani then earned the Fennec Foxes victory, leaving them level with Senegal – who earlier beat Ghana 2-1 – at the top of Group C.

The first half was a quiet affair, though Sofiane Feghouli’s header tested South…

Ghana look set to begin their African Nations Cups campaign without captain Asamoah Gyan, who has been hospitalised with malaria.

As Asamoah Gyan was rushed to a hospital to deal with an unexpected bout of malaria, it confirmed a tough start to Avram Grant’s life as Ghana manager, only a month into the job and having managed them only once in a competitive game.

Confirmed to have a “mild bout” of the tropical disease, Gyan travelled with the team to their first game — a 2-1 loss against Senegal — sitting on the bench but not listed in the squad list. Catching it at an “early stage,” it bodes well for the Black Stars, though…

Senegal opened their African Nations Cup campaign with a dramatic late winner against Ghana in Group C.

MONGOMO, Equatorial Guinea — Moussa Sow’s injury-time goal gave Senegal a stunning 2-1 win over Avram Grant’s Ghana in the opening game of Group C at the 2015 African Nations Cup. Here are three quick points on Tuesday’s game.

    1. Senegal must now be taken seriously

Senegal have been tipped as a sneaky bet to win this tournament by some, and it’s not hard to see why. Alain Giresse has put their house in order and they conceded only once in qualifying; in attack, they are able to call upon an.

Moussa Sow stuns Ghana as Senegal rally late to win

Senegal opened their African Nations Cup campaign with a dramatic late winner against Ghana in Group C.

Moussa Sow grabbed a dramatic late winner as Senegal opened their African Nations Cup campaign with a 2-1 win against Ghana in Group C.

Andre Ayew put Ghana ahead from the penalty spot but Mame Diouf grabbed the equaliser as Senegal heaped the pressure on after the interval.

And substitute Sow was on hand to win it with the last kick of the game and get his country off to a winning start in Equatorial Guinea.

Ghana had the better of the early stages without offering too much of a threat and needed…

Senegal captain Bouna Coundoul has praised head coach Alain Giresse ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations opener against Ghana on Monday.

Zambia and DR Congo opened their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with 1-1 draw in Ebebiyin

Yannick Bolasie’s joy at opening his African Nations Cup account was tempered by the slow start that meant his Democratic Republic of the Congo side had to settle for a point against Zambia.

The Crystal Palace winger had threatened throughout an entertaining Group B opener, twice coming close before lashing substitute Cedrick Mabwati’s cutback into the top corner in the 66th minute.

It was an outstanding finish, and the least the Congolese deserved after dominating despite conceding to Given Singuluma’s…

Asamoah Gyan suffers ‘mild bout’ of malaria ahead of Ghana vs. Senegal

Ghana look set to begin their African Nations Cups campaign without captain Asamoah Gyan, who has been hospitalised with malaria.

Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan was diagnosed with malaria while at the African Nations Cup and was admitted to the hospital in the remote eastern town of Mongomo in Equatorial Guinea, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) said on Sunday.

The GFA confirmed that Gyan was taken to the hospital on Saturday night, but released on Sunday morning after “a mild bout” of malaria.

“The illness was detected at an early stage and Gyan is responding well to treatment,” the GFA said in a statement on its official website.

Cape Verde held Tunisia to a 1-1 draw in their Africa Cup of Nations meeting.

Tunisia and Cape Verde Islands began their African Nations Cup campaigns with a 1-1 draw in Group B.

Tunisia, the 2004 champions, went ahead when Jamelle Saihi played in Ali Maaloul on the left and his precision ball across the six-yard line was tucked away decisively by Ali Moncer.

But Tunisia’s lead lasted only seven minutes as Heldon tucked away a penalty he won.

There were question marks over whether Ben Youssef’s challenge was in the box and how much contact was made but referee Otogo-Castane…

Ghana boss Avram Grant says captain Asamoah Gyan may not play against Senegal in Monday’s Africa Cup of Nations Group C opener.

Tunisia, Cape Verde begin ANC campaign with 1-1 draw

Tunisia and Cape Verde began their African Nations Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw in Group B.

Tunisia, the 2004 champions, went ahead through Mohamed Ali Moncer in the 70th minute but Nhuck Heldon earned Cape Verde a point with a penalty 13 minutes from time.

Cape Verde should have opened the scoring inside the first minute when Fernando Varela found himself all alone in the centre of the area to meet Elvis Babanco’s free-kick only to head the ball against the post.

    Tunisia responded and forged their…

Yannick Bolasie nabs Congo DR a point vs. Zambia in ANC opener

Yannick Bolasie’s goal rescued a point for Congo.

Yannick Bolasie earned the Democratic Republic of Congo a point in their African Nations Cup opener against Zambia.

Zambia were ahead just 62 seconds in through Given Singuluma but Crystal Palace forward Bolasie fired home the equaliser midway through the second half.

The two teams therefore started with a point apiece in a Group B table that also includes Tunisia and Cape Verde.

The early opener came when Rainford Kalaba’s cross from the left, aimed at Ronald Kampamba, was only parried to the edge…

Equatorial Guinea open the African Nations Cup with a flourish

Africa Cup of Nations hosts Equatorial Guinea were held to a 1-1 draw by Congo in the opening match of the tournament.

It was an incredible moment and one that would certainly have been impossible to envision just 10 weeks ago. Equatorial Guinea had started well against Republic of Congo, with their largely Spanish-educated team flicking, darting and pirouetting around tentative, lumping opponents and delighting a crowd that needed little invitation to raise the roof.

Sixteen minutes in, the style gained substance. Right-winger Kike spun free on the right, not for the first time, and cleaved into a defence that…

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang guides Gabon to win over Burkina Faso

Goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Malick Evouna gave Gabon a 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso in their opening game in the African Nations Cup in Bata on Saturday night.

Aubameyang — who had also scored both goals in a 2-0 win over the same opponents in the qualifying campaign — took just 19 minutes to get on the scoresheet again with a right-foot shot from the centre of the box.

And when Evouna headed home a Frederic Bulot cross in the 72nd minute, Gabon ensured they would get their Group…
