Political tension is again mounting in Lesotho, ahead of the February 28 election. This is after King Letsie III appointed Dr. Kananelo Mosito President of the Court of Appeal.
The SABC has reliably learnt that political parties agreed to defer senior appointments until after the poll.
The appointment is allegedly in violation of the electoral pledge overseen by Southern African Development Community facilitator Cyril Ramaphosa.
The Appeal Court President was appointed by the King, on advice of Prime Minister Tom Thabane.
Lesotho’s Attorney General filed a high court application opposing the appointment, but Thabane went ahead with Mosito’s swearing-in.
Deputy Prime Minister Mothetjoa Metsing boycotted the ceremony. Thabane however seems unfazed and says he will wait for the outcome of the court.
The opposition is crying foul.
All parties are hoping for an outright victory
Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD) Deputy Secretary General T’seliso Mokhosi says the appointment is a violation of the electoral pledge and it should have waited.
Campaigning is continuing in the midst of the dispute. Thabane’s All Basotho Convention has launched its election manifesto in Maseru.
All parties are hoping for an outright victory to avoid a troublesome coalition government. “We will listen to how the wind is blowing during the campaign but the one thing I’m telling you is I’m going to win an outright majority if I don’t get it of course I owe you five cents,” says Thabane.
Mokhosi says the party is satisfied with the results they are getting from the constituencies. “It is unlike 2012 where when we went for the elections all the party structures had left with Democratic Congress.”
Basotho National Party’s Machesetsa Mofomobe hopes rallies will lead the party to victory. “We have been holding rallies across the country and it seems it is very good, our people are ready and I think we will make, we are actually the next government.”
Opposition parties are questioning Ramaphosa’s objective as SADC facilitator. Some opposition parties are now calling for his removal.

Mokhosi dit que le groupe est satisfait des résultats qu’ilsobtiennent dans les circonscriptions. « C’est à la différence de2012 où quand nous sommes allés aux élections toutes lesstructures du parti avaient quitté avec le Congrès démocratique. »
Machesetsa Mofomobe du Parti National Basotho espère rallyesmènera le groupe vers la victoire. « Nous avons été la tenue derassemblements à travers le pays et il semble que c’est très bon,notre peuple est prêt et je pense que nous ferons, nous sommesen fait le prochain gouvernement. »
Partis de l’opposition sont interrogent sur les objectif de Ramaphosa comme facilitateur de la SADC. Certains partisd’opposition demandent aujourd’hui sa démission.
