The Pan African Parliament (PAP) has expressed concern about the impact of illicit financial outflows in Africa on development and economic recovery.
Former President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki is expected to present to the PAP on Thursday the findings of the African Union high-level panel on illicit flows from Africa which he chairs.
According to the report, Africa is losing about $50 billion a year through illicit financial outflows as governments and multi-national companies engage in fraudulent activities to avoid paying tax.
The outgoing President of the PAP, Bethel Amadi says this happens while the continent is struggling with insufficient financial resources to fund its development projects.
“The Pan African Parliament is deeply concerned on the effect of this on development and our economic recovery. Consequently as part of our programme for this session we have invited his Excellency the former president of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, chairperson of the high-level panel on illicit flow of funds to share the findings of his panel with this august house,” says Amadi.
