Aid Agencies Warns of ‘Worsening South Sudan Civil War’

A coalition of at least 300 South Sudanese and international aid organizations, NGO Forum, has on Thursday released a report, warning of a worsening situation in raging war in South Sudan. The group alleged that government forces have systematically been raping, killing, abducting, and torturing civilians.

The warning came as South Sudan’s warring factions accuse each other of truce violations.

In the report, the group says the situation has been deteriorating, particularly in the oil-rich Unity State; adding that South Sudanese soldiers have in recent months killed, raped, abducted civilians.

“At least 1,000 civilians were killed, 1,300 women and girls were raped, and 1,600 women and children were abducted in Leer, Mayendit and Koch. The situation for civilians is desperate and getting worse as fighting persists,” the report reads in part.

The agencies also says parts of their report is based on last month assessment report which was carried out to find evidence of atrocities.

The power-sharing deal which was signed in August by rebel leader Dr. Riek Machar and South Sudanese President Salva kiir faces collapse if the rival sides fail to implement the agreement.
