H.E. Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, African Union (AU) Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security (AU-PAPS) today attended his maiden AU Peace and Security Council meeting in his capacity as AU-PAPS Commissioner. At the outset of his briefing, Commissioner Bankole thanked members of Council cum former colleagues for their support in his election and underscored his commitment to faithfully accompany the Peace and Security Council in its critical mandate to advance good governance, peace, stability and security in Africa.
Commissioner Bankole reaffirmed his commitment to permanently engage with the Council on all topical and statutory issues and in that light extended an invitation to members of Council to join an informal yet systematic “breakfast meeting” to brainstorm on creative ways to address governance and security challenges in Africa and to reflect on the impact of global trends on the continent.
With regard to the situation in Sudan, H.E. Commissioner Bankole, commended the Government and People of Sudan on their continuous efforts to define and implement their peace and development priorities for the greater good of the nation. He also welcomed the decision to remove Sudan from the list of “state sponsors of terrorism” and called on Council and partners of Sudan to continue to support Sudan in its trajectory towards sustainable peace and economic development. To underscore his engagement, Commissioner Bankole announced that he will be joining the Council in its field visit to Sudan from 30 March to 1 April 2021.
