Cargojet B767 Freighter Veers Off Runway at Vancouver Airport; Nose Gear Collapses

An Amazon Prime Air Boeing 767-300(F) operated by CargoJet Airways was involved in a runway excursion during a landing at Vancouver International Airport CargoJet flight W82387, operated by a Boeing 767-300(F), was arriving from Hamilton and was cleared for an approach to 08L Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

The Boeing 767 freighter aircraft overran the runway during its landing, collapsing the aircraft’s nose gear.  Conversations between air traffic control and the operating crew revealed that the aircraft was experiencing a problem with the wing leading edge slats.

As a result, the aircraft made the landing at a higher approach speed. Following the landing, the aircraft came to rest off the overshoot end of the runway. The cargo flight was being operated by a three-man crew. No injuries were reported as a result of the landing incident.

Vancouver International Airport CEO Tamara Vrooman gave comment after the incident. She explained that the recovery of the aircraft from its present location will be a complex task. We will need to build, essentially, a road that will allow us to bring in the equipment that will allow us to extract the plane from its current location, said Vrooman.

The airport released an updated statement on Tuesday advising that some airport operations were impacted by the situation. This closure will have an impact on YVR operations and flight schedules. But aircraft continue to arrive and depart on our south runway, the statement read.

It is understood that the north runway will be closed for approximately 2 days. This would facilitate the removal of the aircraft.  A timeline has not been confirmed for the removal. It will be dependent upon investigations into the incident by the Transportation Safety Board.

The aircraft conducting the W82387 service from Hamilton was a Boeing 767-300(F), registered C-GAZI. This is a 30.3 year old converted freighter aircraft belonging to the carrier Amazon Prime air. The aircraft is operated by Cargojet Airways. It has been in operational service with the carrier since its conversion to cargo configuration in September 2020.
