2026 Elections Still Possible in South Sudan if Action Taken Now, Advocate Says

A prominent civil society advocate in South Sudan has affirmed that the country’s long-awaited 2026 general elections remain viable, provided key reforms and preparations begin immediately. Speaking during a public dialogue on governance and democracy in Juba, the advocate noted that although significant obstacles remain, including insecurity, logistical delays, and political mistrust, the electoral process can still succeed if addressed with urgency and commitment.

The 2026 elections are expected to mark a major milestone in South Sudan’s political transition, following years of conflict and repeated postponements. However, the advocate warned that further delays in implementing the necessary conditions such as completing the permanent constitution, forming the electoral commission, and establishing the legal framework could undermine both credibility and public trust.

She emphasized that civil society groups, youth, women, and local communities must be meaningfully involved in the process, calling on the transitional government to uphold its responsibility in creating a peaceful and inclusive environment. We cannot afford to fail again. The people of South Sudan are ready to vote; now it is up to the leadership to deliver, she said.

Concerns also remain about census and boundary demarcation, which are essential for fair representation. The advocate urged the international community to continue supporting electoral institutions with funding and technical assistance, while also pressing for accountability and transparency.

Opposition parties and peace monitors have also highlighted the risk of elections being held in a rushed or unprepared manner. Yet, the advocate remains optimistic. There is still time, she said, but that time must be used wisely. With coordinated effort, 2026 can mark the beginning of a new democratic chapter for South Sudan.
