Zambia Completes Maize Import Deal with Tanzania to Boost Food Security

The Zambian government has finalized the purchase of 195,000 metric tonnes of maize from Tanzania, completing a key part of its plan to address national food shortages caused by prolonged drought and reduced local harvests.

The maize consignment, acquired through a bilateral arrangement, is being stored in Food Reserve Agency (FRA) warehouses across the country, with the majority of the shipment already delivered and the remainder expected in the coming weeks. The government confirmed that the maize was procured at a standard regional rate and transported primarily via the Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA), reinforcing the importance of regional infrastructure in securing food supply chains.

Agriculture officials stated that the imported grain will be used to stabilize local markets and ensure availability of mealie meal across vulnerable communities. The government has already begun preparations for distribution, including through FRA outlets and targeted relief programmes.

Authorities assured the public that the country now holds enough reserves to cover national consumption needs for at least the next six months, pending the next harvest season. The maize will also support school feeding initiatives and buffer stocks in strategic districts.

The conclusion of the maize deal comes amid rising public concern over food inflation and supply gaps. The government has promised continued transparency in the storage and distribution process and warned against hoarding or price manipulation.

Plans are underway to announce an official pricing structure for the imported maize to guide retail sales and prevent market distortions. With full delivery expected soon, Zambia aims to maintain food stability and support households through what remains of the current lean season.
