The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a stern warning to motorists to be vigilant against a growing scam involving counterfeit traffic fines being issued via email and SMS.
In the past fortnight, numerous drivers have reported receiving communications claiming they must settle traffic infringements complete with official logos and links to avoid arrest. However, the ZRP has confirmed these notices are fraudulent and that they are not part of any approved traffic enforcement system.
Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi urged members of the public not to click on any links or submit personal payments. “These are elaborate phishing attempts designed to steal sensitive information or money,” he said, noting that legitimate traffic fines can only be processed through designated police stations or recognized online portals.
An ongoing investigation has been launched into the syndicate behind the scam, and the ZRP has assured that offenders will face prosecution. In the meantime, drivers are advised to confirm any traffic notices directly at their nearest police station or official government platform.
Community liaison officers have begun conducting public awareness campaigns at major traffic nodes, reminding road users to report any suspicious messages and to verify the authenticity of traffic-related communications through official channels.
